Blogging Mistakes You Need To Stop Making Right Now

Dear Blogger: Please Stop Making These Blogging Mistakes Please

So I try to stay away from the haterade, but there are times when things just need to be said! I love bloggers, no one anywhere can say that I don’t and I help a great many of them, as you might have noticed I pretty much have devoted this site to help new bloggers, because dudes and dudettes, I feel your pain. You need to stop making these blogging mistakes today if not yesterday!

That being said, most of us in the blogging world have our circle of other bloggers we pretty much Facebook message with all the time. I am no exception, I like to call us #teamcraycray! So in our talking crap sessions, certain things do come up like things that annoy us to death in the blogosphere.

Keep in mind I don’t just tell you these things to be a hater, I want to help you and as we are a large part of your audience you should know.

Blogging Mistakes #1: Income Reports

I don’t know about you but I was raised and encouraged in almost every job I ever had to not discuss my money! Yet there they are and so many of them listing their paychecks. Let me just say this WE DON’T CARE. That is the honest to god truth, we don’t care how much you make. If you think I am the minority, think again I read an entire thread on the subject with hundreds of comments.

We don’t care how much you make, it is enough to say you make money and tell us how you do it. Let’s get real that is the only thing we care about. What it actually does is the opposite of your intention. It doesn’t make anyone feel inspired, however, it makes those who aren’t doing as well feel worse.

One more thing on the subject. Tell us something! You list the amounts and kudos to you but you never say exactly how you do it which brings me to next thing

Blogging Mistakes #2: Affiliate Posts

Affiliate Marketing is great, truly it is. I dabble in it myself but as it is meant to be instead we are flooded with repetitive posts that look like they have been copied and pasted from the company. If I see another Tailwind post I might lose my mind and every single one says the same exact thing. Umm, another familiar word “Hosting”.

Bloggers really don’t want to stop anyone from making money, and personally, I have bought things through affiliate posts ,if it actually tells me what I need to know about the product and not, word for word, the company line on how I will get 30,000 page views if I just use this and absolutely nothing else. Make it relevant! Teach me something!

Blogging Mistakes #3: We Want To Help You But

Every day I scroll through the blogging questions in Facebook Groups and hey we all have them right? That is ok and the great thing about our community is the help you will find, but let me say this there are some who never stop. If they ask one question they ask 10 and think about this if you are the one asking.

The Internet is a vast landscape of information! Do you even know if you’re getting the right information? You really don’t with so many experts, heck even fashion bloggers are teaching how to blog now. I will tell you this, I did research before blogging and lots of it. I didn’t ask some random blogger in a group, I went to top bloggers like Neil Patel and Jon Morrow to find my answers. Google that shit.

One thing about blogging you should know is it is always changing and that only makes sense since we have to know how to do so many things. Self-educate yourself, I did and because of that I know SEO, Html coding, Social Media Marketing..you get my point. I also followed people around who had experience but most of all you pick it up as you go along.

Blogging Mistakes #4: Why You’re Not Getting Traffic

Another common question is and I have seen this more than a few times. My blog is so good and I have put so much work into it, why am I not getting traffic? Let me tell you what I see. First, it really doesn’t matter how great or brilliant your blog is and wanna know why? There are thousands of really brilliant blogs!

You cannot reap full-time rewards for part time work! This is what I see as one of the primary issues. People will dump their posts across Social Media and think poof its gonna happen. No No No! It won’t. Those of us who have been doing it awhile know it is a lot of work, promotion is eighty percent of what you do and not for an hour or two.

Most popular bloggers are promoting at least 5 hours a day. Wanna know the truth? Somedays I am online working 8+ hours a day. Yes, I get traffic and yes I work damn hard to make it happen. How? I network like a crazy person. I run groups, I solve problems, I interact with so many bloggers and even help them promote their own stuff for free. Engagement is the only answer.

Blogging Mistakes #5: Engagers Not Engagers

We work so hard at this so when we encounter the crappy blogger who thinks they don’t have to put in the work it just makes us so mad. This is so common on Facebook. The link dumpers who join threads and never actually do the work and my personal favorite The un-follower. Are we in High School? Sometimes it really seems like it. You want us to be your friend and then your gonna stop because we aren’t cool enough mmhmm.

Another common misstep is the commenters who just don’t get it. Most of the time they don’t even read the post, why bother commenting if you’re not even going to try. Please stop leaving comments like “Nice Post”. I would rather hear crickets on my comment section. Comments actually add no SEO value to your blog.

Blogging Mistakes #6: Beating A Dead Horse

Finally, we come to my personal favorite. Stop beating a subject or post idea to death! There was a brilliant post about Facebook Groups last year and it was a great idea, hell I signed up for it and then all of a sudden everybody has a list of Top Facebook Groups or how to behave in Facebook Groups.

blogging mistake

We all kind of steal ideas from each other but why would we want to read the same post over and over? Essentially that is what happens and I could name them but who has that kind of time? There is little that is very new but you have to give it a fresh coat of paint, a unique voice or just don’t do it. Just because something worked for one person doesn’t mean the same thing over and over will work for everyone.

Too harsh? You may think so but honestly, I only want to help bloggers be their best and sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind.

Interesting take, and I agree with many (none of this is prevalent in my niche though thankfully), but perhaps add a 7th: Not fully spell/grammar checking your work!

*cough #4 cough*

Yes! Sorry Heidi- this post is riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes. It’s a hard read and I did end up skimming for that reason. It’s a bit rough to critique other bloggers when this post has sentences running together without punctuation, the wrong “your” and many other grammar issues.

I absolutely relate, even been guilty of some of this, but its a learning curve and there really isnt a shortcut is there, you cant just wake up with lotsa relevant followers… but we live in a fast world of fast food and faster cars and we want instant success overnight….. and now I am busy wondering how to do a post exactly like this but also totally exactly quite unlike…. because beating a dead horse I wish I had thought of this sooner.

OMG! I hate the income reports. I never read them and I do not get the point, and the affiliate posts not being spaced drives me crazy. I followed one blog and that was all she did. Bloggers really need to read this.

You made those on purpose and it was effective. Lol. I’m not sure anyone else caught you did it on purpose . I think you should add #8 Instead of commenting try reaching out to author privately so they have a chance to fix it. In your case it’s clear to me you used a mistake to illustrate an example .

Hi Heidi,
Great article. I agree with your tips. I guess the big difference between us is that I work outside the home during the school year. During the summer, my husband has us off cruising (yes, virtually the whole summer). Also, happily, I have a steady writing gig. Since the money pays the bills I give that priority over networking. I do try to squeeze in networking. I just don’t have the time people who don’t work outside the home do. I’m off to read your article about finding the blog audience.

Great tips for both new and experienced bloggers and I appreciate you taking the time to right it. As it helped me take a closer look at what I do.

Great post, totally agree that a successful blog needs a lot of hours putting into it. Disagree about income posts though, I can find them quite inspirational. Having said that though I’d never post mine! xx

LOL! You sum up a few of my feelings pretty well. I don’t blog for serious money right now, but since I participate in sharing threads I’ve noticed trends that sorta drive me crazy 🙂 I wanted to do a gift guide for the holidays last year, but after several weeks of having to share about 10-20 a day between the FB groups I’m in, I nixed that idea. Income reports can drive me nuts and I have several thoughts about them. I know some are written to try and sell something, which…okay! But please make sure it’s a product… Read more »

I saw the title of this post and had to read it. I try real hard not to be that annoying new blogger. I don’t do income reports because let’s face there is not much there. I know that my effort = my results because I see it in the numbers when I don’t put in the work. Also, I hate that some think this is a get rich quick with no work deal and that is completely wrong. Anyway, thanks for writing, as a newer blogger I am trying to be cool and not make these mistakes. 🙂
